Ilhan Omar began her life in Mogadishu, Somalia on October 4, 1982 in an environment soon-to-be consumed by civil war. Due to this turmoil, her family fled Kenya for four years of refugee camp living conditions before finally moving into Minneapolis, Minnesota for safety and stability during the 1990s.
